Teacher Training Opportunities

Suffolk and Norfolk Primary SCITT is coming to West Norfolk and Breckland Suffolk and Norfolk School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) is a long-established and highly successful school-based teacher training provider. We are a partnership of Suffolk and Norfolk County Councils and the University of Suffolk with over twenty years of experience of training teachers in a wide range of partnership schools across East Anglia. We pride ourselves not only on the quality of our training but also the depth of personalisation and support we offer our trainees.

Our primary initial teacher training course currently runs across three training bases in Ipswich, Bungay and Norwich. However, in an exciting development, we plan to establish a fourth training cohort based in the King’s Lynn / Swaffham area.

We know that West Norfolk is a ‘cold spot’ not only for initial teacher training but also for teacher recruitment. We believe a training base in the area will help remove barriers to local aspiring teachers wishing to join the profession as they will be able to do so without extensive travel requirements.

We offer two training programmes for primary teachers. Both courses run from September to July and trainees are awarded both Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a PGCE on successful completion of the course. They are at a postgraduate level so applicants will need a degree to be eligible to apply. Our most popular course is the Tuition Fee programme where trainees are officially students and can access tuition fee and maintenance loans to support themselves financially through the course. We do also offer a Salaried programme where trainees are employed by their placement school. However, this route requires significant financial input from an employing school and so is becoming less common.

Applications are open for training starting in September 2021. We already have a number of primary trainees in the West Norfolk / Breckland area recruited to our programmes for next year but in order to maximise our impact, please share this information with your support staff and the wider school community.

Further details about our courses are available in the brochure attached and on our website www.suffolkandnorfolkscitt.co.uk . We hold regular information events which can be booked from our website events page but we would be happy to put in additional events for your school or cluster if desired.
